Teaching grades 10th through 12th U.S. History and AP European History, Asia McCammon said she loves teaching at Owasso High School.
“My favorite thing about teaching is the students, hands down,” said Asia. “I love seeing them every day, watching their learning process and that “ah-ha” moment, and watching their skills grow throughout the year. They truly do become your kids and you want to protect them and care for them!”
Not only is Asia busy in the classroom, but she is also one of the sponsors for the African American Heritage Club at the high school.
Asia did not originally go to school for teaching, but physical therapy. She found her way to teaching in an unconventional way.
“I went to school to be a physical therapist because I knew I wanted to help people, but I was not passionate about it,” said Asia. “Then a JFK documentary came on and I was completely hooked, and I never looked back from there.”
The person who inspires her every day to work hard and be a great example would be one of her aunts.
“One of my biggest inspirations would be my Aunt Robin, who worked her way through life and has set an example of what it means to be happy and successful and how far hard work and determination can get you in life,” said Asia.
When Asia is not busy in the classroom, she enjoys living an active lifestyle.
“I am a very active person, so I like to run, play tennis, and go to the park with my dog,” Asia said.
During her summer breaks she enjoys spending some quality time with her family and husband as well as playing on a recreational soccer team and teaching summer school.
