Owasso High School’s softball program has been part of Kambry Holson’s life for as long as she can remember, and now, as a freshman on the varsity roster, she is embracing the chance to live up to the standard she grew up watching. That standard, she said, is as much about effort and accountability as it is about wins. “I have been around Owasso softball all of my life and there is a high standard that is expected of you on and off of the field. The culture is winning and busting your rear at all times. Your teammates cheer you on and encourage you through good and bad times. I do like that some of them hold you accountable when you need to be.”
Holson’s path in the game has been shaped heavily by her older sister, Karson, who came through the same program and moved on to play at the college level. “Karson Holson, my sister inspires me. She has already been through the program at Owasso and went on to play college softball. She works hard in everything that she does. We are constantly pushing each other by hitting and working out together.” That shared grind has become a foundation for Kambry’s own ambitions, which already include playing at the next level and pursuing a career as a physical therapist. “I am a freshman and after I graduate high school, I plan on playing college softball and becoming a physical therapist.”
On the field, Holson splits time between catcher and third base, roles that demand different viewpoints and skill sets but both tap into her leadership instincts. “I play catcher and 3rd base. For catching, I get to see the whole field and that is where my leadership quality comes out. For 3rd base, it is a different perspective of the game. You have to have quick reaction time and always locked.” Her summer has been a blend of school workouts and travel ball with Tulsa Elite, keeping her schedule full and her development constant. “Summer workouts are going well for the school. I also play travel ball for Tulsa Elite, so we have been practicing when we are not playing in a tournament.”
Holson’s commitment to athletics extends beyond the diamond. “I play basketball, and I am in the National Honor Society and The Native American Club.” She also looks up to teammates such as Katelyn Knight, whom she admires for putting in unseen work. “Katelyn Knight, always working hard and grinding when no one was watching.”
As she settles into varsity competition, Holson is learning to appreciate each step in the process. “Learning to celebrate the little things of the game. All of the hard work that you put towards the game behind the scenes end up being the big wins.” She knows that consistency in the cage will be key to reaching her goals. “Hitting, you have to constantly hit pretty much every day to work out the tweaks. Being a little bit more patient is what I am trying to improve on.”
