Q&A with Owasso’s Zane Flocks – Presented by Tulsa Bone and Joint

By Elizabeth Contreras

VYPE: What first drew you to cheer and lacrosse?
Zane Flocks: I started playing lacrosse in 2nd grade. I followed my older brothers everywhere, and when one of them played lacrosse, I wanted to do the same. I never expected to become a cheerleader. In 8th grade, my science teacher brought her state championship rings to school. I was playing football at the time, and she challenged me that if I ever decided to quit football, I should give cheer a shot. We shook on it. The week before my sophomore year, I kept my word and showed up to practice.

VYPE: What do you love most about lacrosse?
ZF: It pushes you to stay ready at all times and compete on every play.

VYPE: How would you describe your role on your cheer team?
ZF: Being selected as one of two captains this year was a true honor. I focus on leading by example and making sure we’re aligned in pursuit of our goals.

VYPE: How do you mentally shift between the two sports?
ZF: Cheer is about precision, trust, and being in sync with everyone around you. Lacrosse is fast, physical, and reactive. I’ve learned to intentionally flip the switch between the two.

VYPE: What skills from cheer help you on the lacrosse field?
ZF: One of the biggest benefits from cheer is ankle mobility and lower body stability. I’m grateful for how cheer has strengthened parts of my game that people might not expect.

VYPE: What’s the biggest challenge of balancing two competitive sports?
ZF: I’ve had to learn that being at my best means taking care of my body so I can perform at a high level in both.

VYPE: What has competing in two sports taught you about discipline and leadership?
ZF: Different teams and different people require different approaches, and learning to adapt has made me a better leader.

VYPE: Who has been the most influential person in your journey?
ZF: My mom. Everything I am goes back to her. I wouldn’t trade having her in my corner for anything.

VYPE: What goals have you set for yourself this year?
ZF: My main goal is to make the University of Oklahoma cheer team. I’m putting everything I have into preparing for that opportunity.
